Earth Day: History and How to get Involved
What is Earth Day’s purpose?
Earth Day aims to raise awareness and inspire action to protect our planet and its natural resources.
How did Earth Day start?
Earth Day was founded in 1970 to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues, including pollution, deforestation, and the need for sustainable practices.
How else can I participate?
You can make a difference by signing petitions, advocating for clean energy, and supporting efforts to combat deforestation. Consider giving items a second life by reusing or recycling them instead of throwing them away. Reducing consumption, buying less, or choosing second-hand items are all great ways to help protect the environment.
The city of Grapevine is participating in Don’t mess with Texas® Trash-Off. The Don’t mess with Texas® Trash-Off is part of Texas Department of Transportation’s litter prevention program, which includes Don’t mess with Texas®, and Adopt-a-Highway.
Get involved in local recycling programs!
Grapevine Library is excited to host the Bag to Benches Recycling Program in partnership with Trex Company, a special initiative focused on recycling plastic bags and film. Trex transforms these materials into durable outdoor furniture and composite decking made from reclaimed wood and plastic film.
Plastic bags and film are typically not accepted in curbside recycling programs because they can get caught in the sorting machines that handle other recyclables, such as paper, cans, and bottles.
We encourage you to start collecting your plastic bags and film for this important recycling program and bring them to Grapevine Earth Day! Together, we can help keep our community and planet cleaner, one plastic bag at a time.
