In the heart of Arlington, a vibrant celebration unfolds each year in January to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year, the celebration is Jan. 12-15, 2024. It will showcase local talent, community service, and the advancement of Dr. King’s dream, while commemorating the 35th anniversary of the event organized by the Arlington Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee, Inc. The event kicks off on Friday, Jan. 12, with the MLK Advancing the Dream Gala. The event's keynote speaker will be Joe Madison, widely known as “The Black Eagle.” With over 30 years of experience in radio, Madison is well-decorated with awards from the NAACP, the Guinness World Record Book, and an inductee of the Radio Hall of Fame.

Throughout the celebration, performances, presentations, and service projects will mirror the timeless themes of unity, social justice and the unending journey towards King’s vision of equality. This is especially important for this year's celebration as the encompassing 2024 event theme is "MLK Advancing the Dream: A Path Forward to Impact Change Across Generations.”

“We are excited to share the Arlington Martin Luther King, Jr. "Advancing the Dream" Four-Day Celebration with our Arlington community,” said Aaron Perales, chairperson of the 2024 Arlington Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee, Inc. Board of Directors. “We welcome all that would like to join us as we celebrate 35 years of honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a variety of weekend activities under this year's celebration theme: A Path Forward to Impact Change Across Generations. We look forward to our celebration.”

The artistic flair on display will not only showcase the students' and performers' skills, but it will also reveal their profound passion for the arts. Through singing, dancing, instrumental performances and spoken word, each act is a brushstroke on the canvas of creativity to leave an impact on all who attend. Beyond the spotlight, this celebration is a catalyst for community bonding and lends a meaningful opportunity for the diverse tapestry of Arlington to converge, celebrating the principles and values that King courageously championed.

“Since 1989, the Arlington Martin Luther King, Jr. "Advancing the Dream" Four-Day Celebration has expanded to include something for everyone” says Lisa Thompson, president of the Arlington Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee, Inc. Board of Directors. “This year, art and essay competitions, a gala, a community service festival, a step show and talent showcase, a jazz meets poetry night, a youth musical extravaganza, the day of service opportunities, and more have been incorporated into four days of celebrations – the largest in our country. Arlington’s MLK Celebration has been successful in large part because of the Arlington community. Much success is also attributed to the committee’s dedication and dynamic leadership. Committee members include an impressive list of community leaders who believe to “Advance the Dream” means to live and share his dream each and every aspect of our lives.”
